OCTOBER is Polio Awareness Month

President’s Message
Each year, World Polio Day gives us a moment to pause, reflect, and recommit to the promise Rotary made to the world that no child, anywhere, will ever again suffer the devastating effects of polio. ย In 1988, the World Health Assembly adopted a resolution to eradicate polio around the world. The World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and the CDC spearheaded the initiative in which Rotary International promptly joined the effort.
Polio hit the United States during the first part of the 20th century. Each summer, the virus struck without warning. Nobody knew what caused the poliovirus or how it spread.ย For four decades, parents in this country worried their children would get the virus. ย In 1952, there were nearly 58,000 cases of polio with just over 3000 of these cases resulting in death.
Today, polio is nearly nonexistent in the United States. However, this contagious virus still exists in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and an additional dozen other countries report active outbreaks of vaccine-derived poliovirus. ย Over 35 cases have been reported in September 2026, but numbers alone do not tell the whole story. Above all, polio eradication is a human endeavor โ built on courage, compassion, and the belief that service can reshape the future. ย We remain unwavering with continued hope that one day the entire world will be polio free.
