OCTOBER Rotary Area of Focus is Economic and Community Development.

President’s Message
Rotary identifies Community Economic Development (CED) as one of its seven Areas of Focus. The goal is to empower communitiesβespecially underserved populations, through training, financial access, and sustainable development initiatives.Β Last year, the Rotary Club of Clayton contributed $5000, along with 16 other Rotary Clubs across the world, in fundraising a combined total of $362,000 for a grant titled βThrive at home: keeping families together through living dash wage employment.’ This grant works to establish a community economic development hub in the remote western Highlands of Guatemala. The grant backs the Guatemala thrive initiative, which claims to create 500 living wage jobs in the region, initially benefiting approximately 2500 underserved indigenous residents in the next three years. The initiative has a five-year goal of generating 2000 jobs and providing affordable healthcare for 10,000 individuals, enabling young people and their families to thrive safely at home in their own communities.
More projects like this can be found at the following website: Rotary Action Group for Community Economic Development (RAGCED) which is a global network of experts supporting Rotarians in designing and implementing sustainable economic development projects. Its mission is to provide knowledge, training, and project assistance to create lasting change in underserved communities.

Although this is a global example, we are also challenging ourselves to find local service projects supporting our local economic and community development. We have invited three of our Rotary Club of Clayton members to provide a five-minute overview of the status in the City of Clayton.Β At the Impact Club Meeting, Tuesday, October 13th, Sonya Shook, board member of the Downtown Development Authority and The Clayton Merchants and Business Association (CMBA) will share resources and support provided to our local business owners.Β Β Then, at this Thursday’s Lunch Club Meeting(s), October 15th,Β Trudy Crunkleton, Clayton City Manager, followed by next Thursday, October 22nd,Β Karen Bacon, Vice Chair of the Downtown Development Authority, will provide insight into the management, planning and current status of our cityβs business district.Β Β I am confident that opportunities of how we can provide further support will emerge!
