President’s Message

September is Basic Education and Literacy Month for Rotary.

We can proudly embrace the beginning of the Basic Education and Literacy Month. This month is dedicated to focusing on our commitment to nurturing minds, fostering growth and driving change through education. We all know how critical reading and writing are for success in life – for gaining information, communicating, problem-solving, and critical thinking. These skills are the building blocks for future academic success across all subjects in preparation for future careers and relationships.

Projects undertaken by our Rotary Club are the donation of books each week to Rabun County schools in honor of our guest speakers and distribution of approximately 185 dictionaries to our local elementary schools. Many benefits remain for using a print dictionary, such as alphabetical order, word exploration, spelling, and context. It can also remove students from overwhelming ads with technological word search, allowing them to be more focused and fuel curiosity.

Later this month, we will hear more about our efforts working with the members of our Interact Clubs in Rabun County, Rabun Gap Nacoochee School, and Tallulah Fall High Schools, Scholarships, GRSP Student Support, and the RYLA Program, which provides educational opportunities for personal development, leadership skills and community impact.

Beyond our support of basic education, September 8^th, World Literacy Day, marks a day of renewed commitment and action. Together, let us champion the cause of education, ensuring that every person has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. In doing so, we not only change individual lives but also build a stronger, more resilient community and a more prosperous world.
